Food Trucks, Solicitors, and More

The City of Carbondale regulates certain transient, seasonal, mobile, and temporary business operations to ensure compliance with local ordinance, public safety standards, and state law. This includes businesses that are not permanently based within the city but wish to operate within city limits for a limited duration.

These operations may include:

  • Food Trucks and Mobile Food Vendors

  • Fireworks Stands

  • Solicitors, Peddlers, and Door-to-Door Sales

  • Outside Waste Haulers

  • Other Temporary or Transient Vendors

Operators are required to obtain the appropriate city permit, pay applicable fees, and provide necessary documentation such as licensing and insurance prior to conducting business. In some cases, background checks may be required in accordance with municipal code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are permits a new requirement?

No. Food truck and transient vendor permitting requirements are part of the City’s existing municipal code and have been since at least 2014. The City enforces ordinances consistently to ensure compliance and fairness.

Why is a permit required?

Permits allow the City to verify appropriate licensing, insurance, and compliance with local regulations to ensure businesses operate safely and legally within city limits.

For certain regulated activities, such as soliciting or door-to-door sales, the City conducts background checks as authorized by municipal code. Individuals with disqualifying criminal history, including certain felony or person offenses as defined by ordinance, may not be approved to operate. These requirements are in place to help protect residents and maintain public safety.

How much does a food truck permit cost?

$30 per day or $100 annually for unlimited dates within the calendar year.

Can I decide to operate a mobile business anywhere in town?

No. Vendors must secure permission from property owners, local businesses, or the City before setting up. If a property or business owner says you cannot operate on their property, you must honor their wishes.
